Where to see Highland Cows in Kentucky
So you’ve seen the fluffy cows all over social media. The Highland cows that look so cute and cuddly, and wonder where you can see them in Kentucky? Well there are more spots than you think to visit highland cows in Kentucky and I am going to share with you where you can visit highland cows, some of the experiences the different farms have available and what it’s like when you visit one of these farms.
What to Expect when visiting Highland cows in Kentucky
We personally visited TC Highlands Farm in Pleasureville, KY which is only about 45 minutes from Louisville and about an hour from Lexington. The first thing to note is that all of these farms listed below where you can see Scottish highland cows are working farms. Why does this matter and what does this mean? Most of these farms are raising the highland cattle to sell, and the farm tours for people to visit are more of a bonus. These are not primarily tourist attractions, so set your expectations accordingly!
We loved our visit at TC Highlands Farm. They allowed us to go into the pasture with the cows, and had some calves pinned up in a separate area for us to get closer to and pet and give snacks to. When we first went into the pasture, the owners interacted with the larger cows first. I am not going to lie, it is very intimidating if you are not around cows or any kind of farm animals regularly. The cows are HUGE and they have huge horns. We were very careful and kept our distance or pet them when they were laying down in the pasture. We took our young son (2 at the time), and I would not recommend bringing kids younger than 8 for open pasture meets, it’s too stressful. The experiences where you are interacting with calves or the cows are tied up/contained, are best with children.
Each farm has different experiences and age restrictions so read descriptions carefully when choosing your experience and farm.

Final Thoughts
A Scottish Highland Cow farm visit is definitely worth being on your Kentucky bucket list. It is a unique way to get outside and do something different.
I’ll leave you with a couple tips when visiting a highland cow farm:
- Wear closed toe shoes: I think this is self explanatory, but you are in a cow pasture majority of the time. Not only is it bumpy, and the grass is typically longer, but you will run into cow pies and you don’t want to mess with all that.
- Personally, I’d also recommend wearing long pants. If you are going out there to take photos and want to wear a sundress or something, you don't HAVE to wear pants. Similarly, you are in a cow pasture with bugs, cow droppings and more. It’s more of a comfort thing.
- Make sure your phone or camera is charged and take lots of photos
- Be careful and respectful of the animals. At the end of the day, these are animals and you are in their space. It is always important to be respectful and courteous of the animals and the farms you are visiting.
- As I mentioned previously, these are working farms. Set expectations accordingly! These are not curated tourist attractions, these are also very different than if you’ve gone on a horse farm tour in Kentucky.
If you visit one of these farms, let me know what you think!
