Your go-to Kentucky U-Pick Tulip Guide
It’s spring, so that means beautiful blooms across the state. I’ve been DYING to get to a U Pick Tulip farm so I’m so glad to see several options this year. There's just something about wondering through a flower field and cutting them yourself. Something a little different about U-Pick tulips than other U-pick flowers or berries, is that with a tulip you pick the entire flower including the root and bulb. We loved that the place we did our U-Pick tulips this year, they let us keep the bulbs so we can dry them out and plant on our own next year at our home. When you go to the place you choose, make sure to ask if you want to keep your bulbs.
To replant your bulbs, the farm will cut them off for you after you pick them and put them in a bag. When you get home, set them out to dry in one layer, make sure they are not all in a cup or bowl where they are on top of each other. One the bulbs are set out in a single layer, leave them to dry for 1-2 weeks. Once they are dry, you can clean off any old roots or dirt left on then move them to a cold storage space like a basement, garage or shed, typically people put them in mesh bags. Then they should be ready for when you decide to plant them in the late fall. I am by no means a Tulip expert, but you get the gist.
When do Tulips in Kentucky Bloom? The short answer is late March and Early April, but it basically depends on when they are planted. They are typically planted in October or November, sometimes even December, and bloom 3-4 months later. Because Tulip blooms can be finicky, that is also why on the list below you see a lot of places don't have exact dates posted yet and you really have to watch their socials and websites for updates because once the blooms start, they don't last very long, roughly 3 weeks.
